The Trump administration announced a new three-point strategy for Syria last week that aims to maintain diplomatic influence in the region while withdrawing American troops. The goals are the “enduring defeat of ISIS; the reinvigoration of the political process; and thirdly, the removal of all Iranian-commanded forces from the entirety of Syria,” Ambassador James Jeffrey, the special representative for Syria engagement, said at a press conference in New York City on Thursday.

“The president wants us in Syria until that [the removal of Iranian forces and their proxies] and the other conditions are met. But I want to be clear here: Us. ‘Us’ is not necessarily American boots on the ground,” Ambassador Jeffrey said. “There are many ways that we can be on the ground. We’re certainly on the ground diplomatically. … We have local forces that we have trained in various parts of Syria. Our allies have local forces.”

Currently, the United States has some 2,000 troops on the ground in Syria. President Donald Trump has already managed to essentially eradicate all ISIS terrorist holdings in the region, reducing them to nomadic clans scrambling for resources.

According to the Washington Examiner, White House National Security Adviser John Bolton has been pushing Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other regional powers to amp up pressure in Syria, particularly until Iran withdraws, and enter into a coalition with the United States.

If President Trump can pull this plan together and actually implement it, it would save American lives and not give up regional influence, a win-win for the United States.
