Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) met with President Trump on Monday and advised him to revoke former CIA director John Brennan’s security clearance.

Brennan, CIA director under President Barack Obama from 2013 to 2017, has made it clear he is no fan of Trump’s, publicly tweeting that Trump’s comments at the Helsinki summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin were “treasonous.” Although Brennan is no longer a government official and now works as a commentator for NBC and liberal news outlet MSNBC, for some odd reason he still has security clearance and access to highly classified information.

Sen. Paul has taken issue with that and brought it to national attention. Early Monday morning, Paul tweeted, “Is John Brennan monetizing his security clearance? Is John Brennan making millions of dollars divulging secrets to the mainstream media with his attacks on [Trump]?” He added, “Today I will meet with the President and I will ask him to revoke John Brennan’s security clearance!”

That afternoon, he confirmed on Twitter that the discussion between him and Trump indeed took place.

Just got out of WH meeting with @realDonaldTrump. I restated to him what I have said in public: John Brennan and others partisans should have their security clearances revoked.

Public officials should not use their security clearances to leverage speaking fees or network talking head fees

Paul’s prediction about Brennon could very well have been taking place under our noses. After all, Brennan is working as “senior national security and intelligence analyst” for NBC News and MSNBC, a position that calls for him to analyze and make predictions regarding United States national security. How easy would it be to make predictions if you have the real information?

CNN reports that is it not unusual for former intelligence officials to maintain high-level security clearances even after they end their service and that in in some cases, they provide counsel to new officials as they take their posts. According to CNN, it would be unusual to revoke security clearance because of political criticism.

But if there’s one thing we know about President Trump, it’s that he is far from “the usual,” and is not afraid to break the norm.
