Renowned lawyer and self-professed “liberal Democrat” Alan Dershowitz has revealed his longtime friends are “shunning me and trying to ban me from their social life on Martha’s Vineyard” because of his book “The Case Against Impeaching Trump.” Dershowitz made the revelation in a recent op-ed he wrote for The Hill.
Dershowitz said he voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election and “strongly opposes” President Trump’s immigration policies, but has defended Trump’s constitutional rights and presidential powers. Among those, Dershowitz has said Trump has the power to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller and pardon whomever he wants without being charged with obstruction of justice for either.
“I have defended Trump’s civil liberties, along with those of all Americans,” Dershowitz said. He said he would have similarly defended Hillary Clinton against impeachment if she had been elected, and pointed out he wrote a book defending former President Bill Clinton during his impeachment scandal.
When a longtime liberal is made an outcast just because of his objective views about the president, there is an indication that it is not he who departed from the Left, but rather the Left that booted him away from it.
That said, Dershowitz is deciding to look at the bright side of the situation.
“I’m a teacher and a professor. My job is to provoke and stimulate conversation,” he told The New York Times. “I’m enjoying this. So understand that. For me, it’s a red badge of courage.”
Not only is it a test of courage for the lawyer, who clearly has plenty, but it’s a display of cowardice from the Left.
